Gianluca Martinenghi (conductor)

Gianluca Martinenghi studied piano with Piero Rattalano and the art of composition with Bruno Bettinelli. Since then, he has perfected his studies in orchestral conduction with professors Donato Renzetti and Giacomo Zani. The formation as conductor has permitted him to collaborate with numerous different debuting orchestras.

Martinenghi then involved himself in various musicologist activities, such as, writing and editing specialized articles regarding the piano for magazines like Musica, Symphonia and Piano Time. Furthermore, he embarked on a career at the Teatro Regio in Turin as Maestro di Sala, a position which has permitted him to engage in some of the opera’s repertoire with musicians such as Gianandrea Gavazzeni and Yuri Ahronovijtch.


For many years, Martinenghi worked at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo where, since 1997, he over saw important functions as artistic director and aided in the management of the theatre itself. With the orchestra of the Teatro Massimo in Palermo, Martinenghi has also carried out the performance of numerous symphonic concerts; and, has conducted some of the most important productions of the twentieth century, such as, L’Arca di Noé by Benjamin Britten (of which a CD was recorded); Pollicino by Hans Werner Henze; and, Una favola per caso by Lucio Gregoretti and Nicola Sani.

Martinenghi has also organized prestigious concerts for renowned musicians including Vladimir Ashkenazy, Rudolph Barshaj and Bruno Campanella. In addition, he has collaborated as director within the following theatres: Teatro Massimo of Palermo; Teatro Comunale of Bologna; Teatro dell’Opera of Rome; Teatro Bellini of Catania; Teatro Lirico of Cagliari; Teatro Donizetti of Bergame, Teatro Pergolesi of Jelsi; Menorca Theatre of Spain; Gran Teatro of Cordoba; Teatrodella Misericordia of Palma de Mallorca; Opera Ireland of Dublin; Teatro Villamarta of Jerez; l’Opéra d’État of Tirane; and, symphonic institutions, such as, the Sicilian Symphonic Orchestra, the Regional Orchestra of Abruzzo and the Symphonic Orchestra of the City of Murcia.

Remarkable directional performances which must be underlined are: I Capuleti e i Montecchi by Vincenzo Bellini at the Teatro Massimo of Palermo; Don Pasquale, Il Campanello and La Figlia del Reggimento by Gaetano Donizetti at the Teatro Donizetti of Bergamo; La Traviata by Giuseppe Verdi and Carmina Buranaby Carl Orff at the Teatro Bellini of Catania; and, La Sonnambula by Vincenzo Bellini at the Communale of Bologna.

After having conducted Giuseppe Verdi’s opera Otello at the Teatro Sociale of Rovigo, Martinenghi was the object of great positive consensus among the public and critics. The performance was consequently presented at the Bolzano, Rimini and Novara theatres.

In 2007, he debuted with great success at the Opera Ireland of Dublin with the presentation of Gaetano Donizetti’s Don Pasquale. Additionally, in the 2008 season, Martinenghi obtained astounding success with a tour he did in some of the most prestigious theatres of the Italian tradition with Umberto Giordano’s opera Andrea Cheniér. The same success was attained also in 2008 with the recording of a CD with the orchestra of the Dvorak Theatre of Ostrawa. It focuses on the female arias of Giacomo Puccini’s heroines; and, was collaborated on by the soprano Amarilli Nizza. Martinenghi has recently debuted with the opera Lucia di Lammermoor by Gaetano Donizetti at the Deutsche Oper Theatre of Berlin.  

The opera La Traviata by Giuseppe Verdi, directed by Maestro Martinenghi at the Arenadi Verona of Verona, has also been acclaimed as a great success by the public and by critics alike. Martinenghi’s upcoming projects will include Don Giovanni by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart at the Festival de Avenches and the Poliuto by Gaetano Donizetti at the Palacio de la Musica of Velancia.
